Background of the Study

Poor sanitation is a significant public health concern in developing countries, contributing to the spread of parasitic infections, including soil-transmitted helminths (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). Inadequate access to clean water, poor waste disposal, and open defecation increase the risk of worm infections, particularly among children and low-income populations (Nigeria Centre for Disease Control [NCDC], 2024).

Kogi State, like many regions in Nigeria, struggles with inadequate sanitation infrastructure, exposing residents to parasitic infections such as hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm (Aliyu & Garba, 2024). These infections contribute to malnutrition, anemia, stunted growth in children, and overall poor health outcomes (Usman et al., 2024). Despite government efforts to improve sanitation, worm infections remain prevalent, necessitating further research on the link between sanitation conditions and parasitic disease burden in Kogi State.

This study aims to appraise the relationship between poor sanitation and worm infections, identifying risk factors and recommending strategies for disease prevention.

Statement of the Problem

Despite global initiatives promoting improved sanitation and hygiene, worm infections continue to affect vulnerable populations in Kogi State (NCDC, 2024). Many rural communities lack access to clean water, proper toilet facilities, and adequate waste disposal systems, increasing the spread of soil-transmitted helminths (Ogunleye et al., 2024).

The persistent burden of worm infections suggests gaps in sanitation interventions and public health education. While some studies have explored the impact of sanitation on health, limited research has focused specifically on Kogi State. This study seeks to fill this gap by critically examining how poor sanitation contributes to worm infections and proposing effective control strategies.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the prevalence of worm infections among residents of Kogi State.

2. To evaluate the impact of poor sanitation practices on the transmission of worm infections.

3. To recommend effective sanitation and hygiene interventions for reducing worm infections.

Research Questions

1. What is the prevalence of worm infections in Kogi State?

2. How does poor sanitation contribute to the spread of worm infections?

3. What interventions can reduce the incidence of worm infections in Kogi State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Poor sanitation significantly increases the prevalence of worm infections in Kogi State.

2. Communities with inadequate toilet facilities have a higher burden of worm infections.

3. Improved sanitation and hygiene interventions can reduce worm infections in the state.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on selected communities in Kogi State with varying levels of sanitation infrastructure. Limitations may include self-reported data inaccuracies and logistical challenges in accessing remote areas.

Definitions of Terms

• Poor Sanitation – The lack of access to clean water, proper waste disposal, and hygienic toilet facilities.

• Worm Infections – Parasitic diseases caused by helminths such as hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms.

• Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STH) – Intestinal worms that are transmitted through contaminated soil due to poor hygiene practices.
